Brown\u2019s latest book, Full Planet, Empty Plates: The New Geopolitics of Food Scarcity. These tables and graphs help to explain the precarious situation in which humanity finds itself, as the world leaves an era of food surpluses and enters one of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/planetsave.com\/2010\/07\/17\/the-emerging-politics-of-food-scarcity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">food scarcity.<\/span><\/a><\/strong>\u00a0 Here are some highlights from the collection.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Food Prices Rising<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Between 2007 and mid-2008, world grain and soybean prices more than doubled. Record food price inflation led to <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sustainablog.org\/2011\/02\/rising-prices-of-food-political-stability\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">food-related riots<\/span><\/a><\/strong> and unrest in some 60 countries. Prices eased somewhat due to the Great Recession, but even then remained well above historical levels. In late 2010 into early 2011, prices spiked again to a new record high, helping fuel the Arab Spring. As farmers struggle to keep up with soaring demand for grain and soybeans, this<a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"> ratcheting upward of food prices<\/span><\/strong><\/a> ensures that many of the 219,000 new guests at the global dinner table each night are facing empty plates.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8059\/8163830251_31bf528751.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"332\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In decades past, when food prices spiked, the world could return idled U.S. cropland back into production or draw down grain stocks. But now these two safety cushions are gone: the U.S. cropland set-asides have been phased out, and over the last decade world grain reserves have averaged a dangerously low 74 days of consumption.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8068\/8163830227_01c2fd8d04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"413\" height=\"344\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s farmers are now essentially in a situation where a record grain harvest is needed each year just to keep up with the rise in demand. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\">Close to 80 million people<\/span><\/strong><\/a> are added to the world population each year.\u00a0Meanwhile, some 3 billion people with rising incomes are looking to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cmove up the food chain\u201d<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and consume more grain-intensive livestock and poultry products. Additionally, some countries, especially the United States, recently have begun turning massive amounts of grain into fuel for cars\u2014<a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>feeding cars instead of people.<\/strong><\/span><\/a> In the United States, the world\u2019s leading corn producer and exporter, more corn is now sent to ethanol distilleries than is used in livestock and poultry feed.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7271\/8163863716_49c25e960f.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"335\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately several negative trends are also converging on the supply side of the food equation. These include <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>water tables falling<\/strong><\/span><\/a> as a result of overpumping for irrigation, the loss of fertile topsoil due to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>overplowing,<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and weather patterns becoming less predictable as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>planet warms.<\/strong><\/span><\/a> Recent heat waves and droughts, such as in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/plan_b_updates\/2010\/update89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>Russia in 2010<\/strong><\/span><\/a> and in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>United States in 2012,<\/strong><\/span><\/a> give the world a preview of how climate change can devastate crops.<\/p>\n<p>Another limit on future grain production is emerging as some of the more agriculturally advanced countries appear to have hit a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>\u201cglass ceiling\u201d for grain yields.<\/strong><\/span><\/a> For example, Western Europe\u2019s three leading wheat producers\u2014France, Germany, and the United Kingdom\u2014have not increased wheat yields for over a decade. Japan\u2019s rice yields plateaued in the late 1990s at just below 5 tons per hectare. In China, the world\u2019s number one rice producer, rice yields are now approaching those in Japan and may not be able to surpass them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7250\/8163830187_2349fdf8e4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"411\" height=\"333\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Global Land Rush<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When grain prices took off in 2007-08, some grain exporters such as Russia and Viet Nam restricted or even banned exports in hopes of keeping their domestic food prices from spiraling out of control. A number of grain importing countries, no longer confident that they could rely on the international market, attempted to buy or lease large tracts of land abroad on which to grow food for themselves. Led by investors from countries like South Korea, Saudi Arabia, and India, the bulk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#11\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>land acquisition<\/strong><\/span><\/a> has occurred in sub-Saharan Africa. Ethiopia and the Sudans, where millions depend on international food aid, are principal targets.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7261\/8163863666_0ba01cc9e4.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"379\" height=\"340\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The global land rush is not limited to investors seeking to farm abroad for food security. Others are interested in producing biofuels to meet U.S. or European Union renewable fuel goals, or in producing industrial crops such as timber, rubber, or sugar. Land is also seen as a lucrative investment opportunity by university endowments, investment banks, and pension funds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Preventing a Food Breakdown<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world can overcome the challenges facing agriculture, but not with business-as-usual approaches to food, population, and energy. It will take something like a wartime mobilization to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthpolicy.org\/books\/fpep\/fpep_data#12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ff6600;\"><strong>meet four key goals:<\/strong><\/span><\/a> stabilize climate, restore the earth\u2019s natural support systems, stabilize population, and eradicate poverty. The good news is that in many ways these goals reinforce one another. For example, the shift to smaller families helps bring people out of poverty, and vice-versa. The education of all children, boys and girls alike, is needed to eradicate poverty and stabilize population, and ultimately will play a role in helping the world achieve lasting food security.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7111\/8163863624_0484d45ab0.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"428\" height=\"326\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Scroll through some of the key graphs in the slideshow on our website or on the EPI SlideShare page.
