Todos os pa\u00edses est\u00e3o enfrentando problemas graves e crescentes com os res\u00edduos de pl\u00e1stico. Um novo filme de Jeremy Irons chamado “Trashed” ser\u00e1 lan\u00e7ado em breve e mostra a extens\u00e3o devastadora deste material onipresente no ambiente natural. O pl\u00e1stico est\u00e1, literalmente, em todos os lugares: em min\u00fasculas part\u00edculas no oceano, em cursos de \u00e1gua, florestas – mesmo em nossos corpos.<\/p>\n

O hemisf\u00e9rio sul est\u00e1 particularmente lutando com a quest\u00e3o dos res\u00edduos de pl\u00e1stico, por isso \u00e9 uma boa not\u00edcia que o Paquist\u00e3o acaba de passar uma nova legisla\u00e7\u00e3o – o chamado A Proibi\u00e7\u00e3o (fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o, venda e uso) de produtos pl\u00e1sticos n\u00e3o degrad\u00e1veis – que pro\u00edbe a importa\u00e7\u00e3o, a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o, armazenamento, com\u00e9rcio, fornecimento, distribui\u00e7\u00e3o, venda e o uso de todos os produtos descart\u00e1veis de pl\u00e1stico feitos total ou substancialmente de polietileno ou polipropileno ou poliestireno – a menos que eles sejam oxibiodegrad\u00e1veis.<\/p>\n

Pelo regulamento anunciado pelo ministro para as Altera\u00e7\u00f5es Clim\u00e1ticas, o cumprimento \u00e9 exigido no territ\u00f3rio federal do Paquist\u00e3o a partir de abril de 2013 \u2013 ficando a cargo do Minist\u00e9rio coordenar a introdu\u00e7\u00e3o da tecnologia do pl\u00e1stico oxibiodegrad\u00e1vel nos governos provinciais. Este \u00e9 um passo ousado do Paquist\u00e3o, mas tem implica\u00e7\u00f5es muito mais amplas.<\/p>\n

A legisla\u00e7\u00e3o pro\u00edbe n\u00e3o s\u00f3 a fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de produtos pl\u00e1sticos descart\u00e1veis convencionais no Paquist\u00e3o, mas tamb\u00e9m impede que sejam importados para o Paquist\u00e3o. Isto significa que todas as empresas de qualquer lugar do mundo que est\u00e3o produzindo e exportando pl\u00e1sticos descart\u00e1veis e produtos assim embalados para o Paquist\u00e3o devem faz\u00ea-lo e \/ ou empacot\u00e1-los com tecnologia oxi-biodegrad\u00e1vel a partir de um fornecedor registrado com o governo do Paquist\u00e3o.<\/p>\n

Em seu comunicado de imprensa, o Ministro observou que a tecnologia “oxi-biodegrad\u00e1vel de pl\u00e1stico \u00e9 simples e n\u00e3o necessita altera\u00e7\u00e3o nas m\u00e1quinas nem no processo de produ\u00e7\u00e3o” dos produtos de pl\u00e1stico. Tudo o que \u00e9 necess\u00e1rio \u00e9 “uma pequena quantidade de aditivo baseado em oleolefina que \u00e9 misturado com a mat\u00e9ria-prima (gr\u00e2nulos), para desenvolver as propriedades biodegrad\u00e1veis do pl\u00e1stico.”<\/p>\n

O ministro concluiu sua entrevista dizendo: “A fim de promover esta tecnologia no pa\u00eds criamos grupos de discuss\u00e3o sobre pl\u00e1sticos biodegrad\u00e1veis para criar a consci\u00eancia entre os empres\u00e1rios. Gra\u00e7as a esses esfor\u00e7os, um n\u00famero de usu\u00e1rios como; P\u00e3o Dawn, MENUE, KFC, McDonalds, Hyper Star, Sazgar, DHA, ICI de poli\u00e9ster, etc j\u00e1 come\u00e7aram a usar sacos pl\u00e1sticos oxi-biodegrad\u00e1veis , como parte de sua responsabilidade social”.<\/p>\n

Parece incr\u00edvel – na verdade, quase bom demais para ser verdade – que um aditivo “simples” pode resolver um problema em todo o mundo, e nos leva \u00e0 pergunta: por que todos os governos n\u00e3o legislam que este aditivo seja inclu\u00eddo na fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de pl\u00e1stico?<\/p>\n

Um dos principais fornecedores mundiais deste “pl\u00e1stico de vida controlado ” \u00e9 a empresa Symphony, do Reino Unido. Voc\u00ea j\u00e1 deve ter visto sacolas pl\u00e1sticas com o s\u00edmbolo de uma gota com d2w escrito dentro. Este pl\u00e1stico automaticamente \u201cse autodestr\u00f3i” em um tempo pr\u00e9-determinado.<\/p>\n

Ao ajustar o percentual de aditivo e suas combina\u00e7\u00f5es, a Symphony pode alterar o per\u00edodo de vida \u00fatil de um produto de pl\u00e1stico descart\u00e1vel de acordo com a sua utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o, ap\u00f3s o que, um catalisador denominado d2w presente na cadeia molecular dos pol\u00edmeros os transformar\u00e3o em biodegrad\u00e1veis.<\/p>\n

Este processo pode ocorrer na terra ou na \u00e1gua, enquanto o oxig\u00eanio est\u00e1 presente e \u00e9 acelerado pela luz ultravioleta e calor em ambiente aberto. O que \u00e9 mais importante – e \u00e9 a op\u00e7\u00e3o preferida – o pl\u00e1stico ainda pode ser reciclado se recolhido antes do fim de sua vida \u00fatil.<\/p>\n

Symphony sustenta que as cadeias polim\u00e9ricas quebradas podem ser bioassimiladas pelos microrganismos do mesmo modo que acontece com as folhas e a palha. A convers\u00e3o final dos componentes originais do pl\u00e1stico resulta em \u00e1gua, di\u00f3xido de carbono, e biomassa sem deixar res\u00edduos nocivos.<\/p>\n

Plastic Fantastic?\u00a0The Ecologist’s Lorna Howarth reports on news and action from the environmental frontline… Could a simple additive resolve a world-wide problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

All countries are facing severe and growing problems with plastic waste \u2013 indeed a new film featuring Jeremy Irons called Trashed<\/strong><\/span><\/a> <\/span>will soon be released which shows the devastating extent of this ubiquitous material in the natural environment. It is literally everywhere: in minute particles in the ocean, in watercourses, forests, hedgerows \u2013 even in our bodies.<\/p>\n

The Global South is particularly struggling with the issue of plastic waste, so it\u2019s welcome news that Pakistan has just passed new legislation \u2013 called The Prohibition of Non-degradable Plastic Products (Manufacture, Sale and Usage) Regulations, 2013 \u2013 that bans the import, manufacturing, stockpiling, trade, supply, distribution, sale and use of all disposable plastic products made wholly or substantially of polyethylene or polypropylene or polystyrene – unless they are oxo-biodegradable.<\/p>\n

The regulations, announced by the Minister for Climate Change, state that compliance is required in the federal territory of Pakistan from April 2013 \u2013 with the Ministry coordinating the introduction of the alternative plastic oxo-biodegradable technology with Provincial governments. This is a bold step by Pakistan, but it has much wider implications.<\/p>\n

The legislation prohibits not only the manufacture of conventional disposable plastic products in Pakistan, but also prevents them being imported into Pakistan. This means that all companies anywhere in the world exporting conventionally-produced disposable plastic products to Pakistan must make and\/or package them in future with oxo-biodegradable technology from a supplier registered with the Pakistan government.<\/p>\n

In his Press Briefing, the Minister noted that, \u201coxo-biodegradable plastic technology is simple and needs neither alteration in machinery nor in the manufacturing process\u201d of plastic products. All that is required is that \u201ca small quantity of olefin-based additive is mixed with the raw material (granules) to develop biodegradable properties in plastic.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Minister concluded his briefing by saying \u201cWith a view to promoting this technology in the country, we held workshops on biodegradable plastics to create awareness among entrepreneurs. Because of these efforts, a number of users like; Dawn Bread, KFC, McDonalds, Hyper Star, Sazgar, DHA, ICI Polyester, MENUE etc. have started using oxo-biodegradable plastic bags as part of their social responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n

It seems incredible \u2013 in fact almost too good to be true \u2013 that a \u2018simple\u2019 additive can resolve a world-wide problem, and begs the question, why don\u2019t all governments legislate that this additive is included in plastic manufacture?<\/p>\n

One of the world\u2019s major suppliers of this \u2018controlled-life plastic\u2019 is the UK company, Symphony. You may have seen their biodegradable plastic bags with the d2w teardrop symbol on them. This plastic automatically \u201cself-destructs\u201d at a predetermined time.<\/p>\n

By adjusting the amount of additive, Symphony can change the shelf-life of a disposable plastic product according to its usage, whereupon, a catalyst within the d2w breaks down the molecular chain of polymers into \u2018harmless\u2019 substances that are biodegradable.<\/p>\n

This process can take place on land or in water as long as oxygen is present and is accelerated by ultraviolet light and heat in the open environment. What\u2019s more \u2013 and is the preferred option \u2013 the plastic can still be recycled if collected before the end of its useful life.<\/p>\n

Symphony maintains that the broken-down polymers can be bio-assimilated by micro-organisms in the same way as is the case for leaves and straw, converting the original components of the plastic into carbon dioxide, water and biomass leaving no harmful residues.<\/p>\n

At the time of going to press, The Ecologist is still awaiting feedback from an independent scientist to confirm that the \u2018harmless\u2019 substances left behind after decomposition of oxo-biodegradable plastics are indeed harmless when bio-assimilated.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, much of this plastic is still derived from petroleum, and therein lies the Achilles\u2019 Heel of this story: the continued dependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n
