Brazilian NGO backs oxo-biodegradable tech as waste plastic solution<\/strong><\/p>\nBrazilian environmental NGO, FUNVERDE, has endorsed oxo-biodegradable plastic as the country\u2019s most effective solution to plastic waste which escapes into the environment.<\/p>\n
The organisation explained that Brazil has a substantial plastic waste problem and that it has conducted research into degradable plastics since 2005.<\/p>\n
The research looked for a plastic which would work as claimed and which could be verified by the necessary laboratory reports based on international standards that could prove degradability, biodegradability and non-toxicity.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn researching solutions to our plastic waste problem, we found that oxo-biodegradable technology causes plastics to convert at the end of their useful life into a material which will degrade, then biodegrade, in the environment in the same way as a leaf\u201d, said Claudio Jose Jorge, FUNVERDE\u2019s president.<\/p>\n
Symphony Environmental, a UK specialist in oxo-biodegradable technology, said that it expects to benefit substantially from the endorsement of the technology.<\/p>\n
The company added that it already has a strong presence in Brazil, supplying a number of the country\u2019s biggest names. Its d2w product is currently distributed by RES Brazil, who has been authorised to use the FUNVERDE logo.<\/p>\n
According to Jorge, FUNVERDE endorsed oxo-biodegradable plastics over bio-based compostable plastic which he said \u201cis tested to biodegrade only in the special conditions found in an industrial composting plant, but not in the open environment\u201d.<\/p>\n
He added that it \u201cis too expensive for everyday use\u201d and that plastics can be made with oxo-biodegradable technology by factories in Brazil at little or no extra cost with their existing machines and polymers, and without any loss of jobs.<\/p>\n
